"Vigyan Mail- Science Exhibition on Wheels"
began its 72-day second phase journey here today- a journey
that will take the exhibition to 27 cities in 11 states across
the country, showcasing the progress made in science and technology
since independence. Based on the feedback of the first run,
the refurbished exhibition coordinated by Rashtriya Vigyan
Evam Prodyogiki Sanchar Parishad will offer valuable opportunity
to people, especially children and youth to understand the
challenges and achievements in different sectors of science
& technology. Flagging off the Vigyan Mail, the Minister
for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, Shri Kapil
Sibal expressed happiness that the private sector has come
forward to join the project. He said that every member of
the country needs to be empowered by scientific knowledge
to help him in taking rational and informed decisions on issues
affecting various aspects of life. The exhibits cover a wide
range of issues e.g., environment, cost of development, using
the energy inside an atom for generating energy and a host
of other applications. Advances in genetic engineering are
explained in simple language. Several computer monitors show
interesting science based programmes. Computer games have
also been devised to attract visitors and test their knowledge
and aptitude in science. To coincide with the Year of Physics,
a number of working models will be displayed on the platforms
to encourage the visitors to understand concepts of physics
through participation. It is a great kaleidoscopic edutainment
on trailblazing achievements of our scientists. The exhibition
is in 12 coaches with many important departments and organizations
participating. These include defence, space, atomic energy,
information technology, telecommunication, environment &
forests, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, water resources,
ocean development, non-conventional energy sources, meteorology,
survey, science communication and technology information.
Indian Railways are supporting the venture with infrastructure,
services and operational assistance. Platform activities include
interactive and participatory exhibits. The first phase of
this exhibition, called Vigyan Rail, under the auspices of
Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi was completed as part of the Year
of Scientific Awareness 2004. There were 57 halts in this
run lasting eight months and the exhibition elicited tremendous
response at every halt. Dr. V.S. Ramamurthy, Secy., Department
of S&T, Shri V.K. Govil, Addl. Divisional Railway Manager
(Northern Railway) were also present on the occasion.
