New Desalination Potable Water Plant at Lakshadweep
 
A new desalination plant for conversion of sea water into potable water is to be completed by the end of May 2005. The plant with a capacity of one lakh litre per day at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep will be based on Low Temperature Thermal Desalination System (LTTD). The cost of desalination would be around 25 paise per litre at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep.

This information was given by Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Ocean Development in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today. The Minister also informed that the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai has successfully demonstrated two laboratories scale desalination plants based on LTTD system having a capacity of 500 and 5000 litre per day.
