| Prof. C.N.R. Rao becomes first
recipient of India Science Award 2004 |

Prof. C.N.R. Rao, an outstanding eminent scientist
has become the first recipient of the India Science Award
for the year 2004. The India Science Award was announced by
the Minister for Science and Technology Shri Kapil Sibbal
during the National Science Day celebrations held recently.
The India Science Award was instituted by the
then Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee during the India
Science Congress held in January 2003. The Award has envisaged
to be the highest and the most prestigious national recognition
for outstanding contribution to science. The primary and essential
criterion for the award is demonstrated and widely accepted
excellence in science.
Prof. C.N. R. Rao has been given this prestigious
award for his outstanding and sustained contributions as well
as discoveries in solid state and material chemistry and significant
contributions to this subject for the past four decades.
