India and Sweden have signed an agreement
on co-operation in the fields of Science and Technology enabling
strong impetus to collaboration in identified areas of mutual
strength such as IT, biotechnology and environment-related technologies.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Shri Kapil Sibal,
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology
and Ocean Development and his Swedish counterpart, Mr. Leif
Pagrotsky, Minister for Education & Culture in Stockholm.
The comprehensive agreement has been a result of commitment
at the highest levels on both sides for co-operation through
joint research, greater academic exchanges and to facilitate
industrial research and development.
Shri Sibal who is on a visit to Stockholm from December
9-12, 2005 as a special invitee of the Swedish Government to
the Nobel Prize Ceremonies, was also invited to participate
in a Summit on Present and Future Challenges in Science
along with ministerial representatives from a group of select
countries including Japan, USA, France and Korea. The meeting,
chaired by Swedish Minister Leif Pagrotsky, discussed how governments
and the scientific community can better use science for the
benefit of society and to solve human problems.
During his extensive interaction with the Swedish press, Shri
Sibal has been emphasising the priority the UPA Government places
on the benefits of science reaching the agricultural sector
and those economically and socially marginalized. The Minister
has also projected Indias recognised and growing reputation
as a major player in cutting edge technologies such as IT and
biotech and its emergence as hub in the global market.
Besides being a special invitee of the Nobel Prize Committee
for attending the Nobel Prize award ceremony on December 10,
2005 and the prestigious Nobel Banquet at the Stockholm City
Hall, Shri Sibal has also been personally invited by King Carl
XVI Gustaf of Sweden to an exclusive dinner at the Palace for
the Nobel Laureates on December 11, 2005. The invitation followed
a meeting in New Delhi in November, 2005, when Shri Sibal interacted
with the Royal Technology Mission of leading Swedish CEOs and
