Submersible Capsule

LOK SABHA

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, an autonomous institute under Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has designed and developed a Remotely Operated unmanned Submersible which is 2.53 m long, 1.80 m wide with height of 1.70 m. This can carry a payload of 150 kg. The complete hardware and software for the instrumentation and control system was developed by Indian Scientists. An integrated navigation system comprising Hydro Acoustic Navigation System (HANS), Inertial Navigation System and Doppler Velocity Log has also been developed. This would benefit researchers in carrying out various research works like sampling, seabed, photography, inspection of underwater vehicles, pipelines, etc.

This information was given by Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Shri Kapil Sibal, in the Lok Sabha today.
