National awards for S&T communication and
popularization aim at stimulating and encouraging through
incentives, high quality work in the areas of science and
technology communication and popularization and nurturing
of scientific and technological temper among people. Under
this scheme there are six awards:
(i) National Award for Outstanding Effort in Science &
Technology Communication (Name amended): This award is
presented to an individual or an institution for outstanding
work in communication of science and technology and/or promoting
of scientific temper which had the widest impact in the country
during the past five years. The award consists of Rs. 2,00,000/-
(Rupees Two Lakhs) in cash, a memento and a citation (Award
money enhanced).
(ii) National Award for Outstanding Effort in Science
& Technology Communication through Books and Magazines:
This award is presented to an individual or an institution
for outstanding efforts in popularization of science &
technology and/or promoting scientific temper through books,
magazines, Internet, etc, during the past five years. The
award comprises Rs.1,00,000/= (Rupees One Lakh) in cash, a
memento and a citation (Award money enhanced)
(iii) National Award for Outstanding Effort in Science
& Technology Popularization among Children: This award
is presented to an individual or an institution for outstanding
work in popularization of science & technology and/or
promotion of scientific temper among children which had the
widest impact in the country during the past five years. The
award consists of Rs.1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lakh) in cash,
a memento and a citation (Award money enhanced)
(iv) National Award for Outstanding Effort in Translation
of Popular Science & Technology Literature: (New)
This award is presented to an individual journalist or an
institution for outstanding work in translating popular science
and technology literature in and from regional languages during
the past five years. The award consists of Rs.1,00,000/- (Rupees
One Lakh) in cash, a memento and a citation.
(v) National Awards for Outstanding Effort in Science
and Technology Communication in the Print Medium : (New)
This award will be presented to an individual correspondent
or an institution for outstanding efforts in communication
of science & technology and/or promotion of scientific
temper through print media during the past five years. The
award comprises Rs.1,00,000/= (Rs. One Lakh) in cash, a memento
and a citation.
(vi) National Award for Outstanding Effort in Science
and Technology Communication in Electronic Medium: (New)
This award will be presented to an individual correspondent
or an institution for outstanding efforts in communication
of science & technology and/or promotion of scientific
temper through radio and/or television media during the period
under consideration. The award comprises Rs.1,00,000/= (Rs.
One Lakh) in cash, a memento and a citation.
The scheme is being implemented by National Council for Science
& Technology Communication (Rashtriya Vigyan Evam Prodyogiki
Sanchar Parishad), Department of Science & Technology,
New Mehrauli Road, New Delhi-110016,
Every year nominations are invited in prescribed format from
heads of national science academies, Presidents of professional
science & engineering societies, Vice Chancellors of Universities,
Directors of research laboratories, Heads of Departments in
central and state governments, Chairmen of registered societies
of S&T based voluntary organizations and communicators
who have been honored with these awards in previous years
through open advertisements in media. The prizes are announced
each year on occasion of the National Science Day and are
presented in a public function.
Eligibility Criteria
a. This scheme is open to resident Indian citizens/institutions
registered in India, except those individuals who are employed
in the Department of Science and Technology.
b. Direct applications or self-nominations are not considered.
Nominations can be made only in the specified format.
c. Laureates of the awards will be eligible for reconsideration
after a period of five years.
