Kapil Sibal Inaugurates Emerging Technologies Gallery at National Science Centre

Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Shri Kapil Sibal today inaugurated the Emerging Technologies Gallery at the National Science Centre in New Delhi. The new gallery “ Emerging Technologies- A Look into the Future” showcases a range of sunrise technologies which promise to change human life in coming decades. These are mainly in the areas of Space, Information and Communication, Medicine and Biotechnology, Oceanography and Earth Sciences, Agriculture, Material Science, Nanotechnology, Energy and Transportation.

On display are some attractive and interactive exhibits. These include a real endoscope that guides the visitor to view inside the stomach to diagnose diseases, a live telemedicine corner enabling tele-consult with expert doctors of Apollo Hospital in Chennai, a model of Tokomak(ITER), a joint international research and development project with India as a partner, which aims at demonstrating the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power, a rotating virtual 3-D projection globe with supporting scientific information and content on Earth from Space, a virtual book about Gels and their uses to mankind and also a view of the interior of a Delhi Metro Rail coach.

Addressing a large number of students who became the first group of visitors to the new gallery, Shri Kapil Sibal stressed the need for keeping alive the spirit of inquiry. Science, he said, is discovery of the unknown and spirit of inquiry, therefore, is a must. Terming the children as an ‘Emerging Generation”, he urged them not to be shy of using the words “ Tell me Why”. The Minister also lauded the efforts of the National Council of Science Museums and expressed hope that it will help generate excitement among students regarding various choices in Science and Technology.

Also present on the occasion were Shri I K Mukherjee, Director General, National Council of Science Museums and Shri Shivprasad Khened, Director, National Science Centre, Delhi.
