India Meteorological Department in collaboration
with SAARC Meteorological Research Centre (SMRC) Dhaka is
hosting a SAARC Training Workshop on MM-5 Model in New Delhi
from 27th February to 10th March, 2006. MM-5 is a 5th generation
meso scale numerical weather prediction model developed by
National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), USA, which
can be run on a variety of computer platforms ranging from
high power computing system to a Desktop (Pentium with LINUX
environment). The model is widely used by operational and
research community to understand and predict meteorological
events like tropical cyclone, thunderstorm, heavy rainfall
etc. which are very common on SAARC region. The model is currently
run at IMD New Delhi for operational use. In view of wide
experience and expertise in the field available in India,
holding of the training workshop on MM-5 model in India was
recommended by the 12th Governing Body Meeting of SMRC held
in Dhaka during October, 2005. Meteorologists of all 7 SAARC
countries and SMRC Dhaka will be attending this workshop.
Experts from IMD, NCMRWF, IIT Delhi, SMRC Dhaka and from some
other organizations will deliver lectures in this workshop.
The Workshop primarily aims at training meteorologists of
SAARC countries in various components of MM-5 model and its
application in operational forecasting and research. It is
expected that at the end of the training, the trainees would
be able to implement MM-5 model in their respective countries
for operational/research applications.
Prof. V.S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science and
Technology (DST), Government of India will be the Chief Guest
and will inaugurate the workshop being held on 27th February,
