National Science Day Celebration

National Science Day Lecture
A Memento is being presented to Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS by Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, DST for delivering a National Science Day Lecture on 25.02.2011 at IIT, New Delhi

On the initiative of this department, the Government of India had designated February 28th as the National Science Day, way back in 1986.  On this day Dr. C.V Raman had announced the discovery of the celebrated “Raman Effect”  for which he was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics.  On this occasion, theme based science communication activities are carried out all over the country.  The theme selected for this year is “Chemistry in our Lives”. 
           
This year Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, who is eminent scientist of national and international repute has delivered the National Science Day Lecture on 25th February, 2011 at Dogra Hall in IIT Delhi.  The titled of his Lecture was “Intuition and Inspiration: A Story of Science” it was attended by a huge gathering of scientists, students of nearby schools and colleges, faculty members of IIT, DST scientists and other dignitaries.  The gathering was also addressed by Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary DST and Dr Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT Delhi. 

The Distribution of National Awards on Science & Technology Communication Function was organized on 28th February, 2011 at Raman Auditorium, Technology Bhawan, New Delhi.  On this occasion, the National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication through print media including books and magazine was given to Dr. Chitta Ranjan Mishra, Bhubaneswar (Orissa), National Award for Outstanding Effort in Science & Technology Popularization among Children was given to Shri Jadhav Balasaheb Bharma, Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Dr. Pramod Chandra Tamuly, Jorhat (Assam).  In addition to that National Award for Women’s Development through application of Science & Technology for the year 2009-10 given to Dr. Seema Bhadauria, Agra (UP) and Society for Rural Industrialization, Ranchi (Jharkhand).  On this occasion Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Hon’ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences and Parliamentary Affairs has graced the occasion as a Chief Guest and this function was presided over by Shri Ashwani Kumar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Planning and Parliamentary Affairs.  The audience was also addressed by Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, DST.
