IN SOUTHERN PENINSULA 5369. SHRI T.T.V. DHINAKARAN:
Will the Minister of SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY be pleased to
state: (a) whether Government are aware of the new
threat of seismological disturbances in the Southern Peninsula, particularly Tamil
Nadu; (b) whether Government have assessed the reasons for
this new phenomenon and the potential earthquake/tremor in the region; and (c)
if so, the details thereof? ANSWER MINISTER

DEPARTMENT OF OCEAN DEVELOPMENT (SHRI KAPIL SIBAL) (a):
No unusual seismic activity has been recorded in the Southern Peninsula, including
Tamil Nadu. As per Seismic Zoning Map of India, prepared under the auspices of
Bureau of Indian Standards, the country has been divided into four seismic zones,
i.e. Zone II-V. Zone-V is considered to be most seismically active, while Zone-II
is the least. A major portion of the Southern Peninsula, including, Tamil Nadu
fall in Zones II and III. (b) & (c): Do not arise. |
